black smokers

Deep-sea mineral spouts

Black smokers are hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor that emit superheated water darkened by mineral particles.

The water, reaching temperatures above 350°C, carries dissolved metals that precipitate on contact with cold seawater, forming tall chimney-like structures.

Despite the extreme conditions, these vents support unique ecosystems of bacteria, tube worms, and other organisms that thrive without sunlight.
