subvariant
Strain within strain
A subvariant is a variant within a variant—a further subdivision of something already distinguished from a main type.
The term gained wide currency during the COVID-19 pandemic, when viral mutations spawned lineages that themselves mutated: The BA.5 subvariant spread rapidly.
Outside epidemiology, subvariant describes any secondary branching: a subvariant of the original recipe.
