study halls
School free periods
Study halls are supervised periods in a school schedule when students have no class and are expected to use the time for homework, reading, or quiet study.
The term also refers to the rooms where these sessions occur: I finished my essay during study hall.
In American secondary schools, study halls function as scheduled free periods with adult oversight.
