redshirting

Postponing kindergarten entry

Redshirting is the practice of holding a child back from starting kindergarten for a year, usually to give them a developmental advantage over younger classmates.

The term comes from college athletics, where a redshirt is a player kept out of competition for a year to extend their eligibility.
