street organ

Sidewalk music box

A street organ is a mechanical musical instrument played by turning a crank, traditionally used by itinerant musicians to perform in public spaces for tips.

Unlike church organs, street organs are portable and self-playing, producing music from pinned cylinders or perforated paper rolls.

The operator, sometimes accompanied by a monkey, would wheel the instrument through neighborhoods: The street organ's cheerful tune drew children to the corner.
