pianola

Roll-reading music machine

A pianola is a player piano—a piano that plays automatically using a mechanism triggered by perforated paper rolls.

The keys move as if operated by a ghost pianist.

The term, originally a trademark, became generic for any self-playing piano: The old pianola in the corner hadn't worked in decades.

Now largely historical, replaced by digital systems.
