Share ownership proof
A stock certificate is a physical document proving ownership of shares in a corporation.
Before electronic record-keeping, these ornately printed certificates were the primary evidence of stock ownership: The old stock certificates in my grandfather's desk turned out to be worthless.
Most trading now happens digitally, making paper certificates largely ceremonial or collectible.
