state animal
Designated regional creature
A state animal is an animal officially designated as a symbol of a U.S. state, chosen by the state legislature.
Most states have several: a state bird, state fish, state insect, and so on.
The bison is the state animal of Kansas.
The designations are largely ceremonial, often reflecting regional wildlife or cultural heritage.
