ceremonial mace
Ornate authority symbol
A ceremonial mace is an ornamental staff carried as a symbol of authority in legislative bodies, universities, and other institutions.
Unlike the medieval weapon it descends from, the ceremonial mace serves no practical function—it represents the power and legitimacy of the body before which it is displayed.
In parliaments and congresses, the mace is placed in a prominent position when the chamber is in session.
The sergeant-at-arms carried the mace into the House chamber.
