state motto
Official territorial phrase
A state motto is an official phrase adopted by a state as its symbolic expression of identity, values, or history.
U.S. states display their mottoes on seals, flags, and license plates: New Hampshire's "Live Free or Die," New York's "Excelsior." Most are in English or Latin, though Hawaii's is in Hawaiian.
The term applies similarly to provinces and other subnational divisions worldwide.
