spotter plane
Reconnaissance aircraft overhead
A spotter plane is a small aircraft used to locate targets, survey terrain, or direct artillery fire and other military operations from above.
The term extends to civilian uses: planes that spot fish for commercial boats, monitor wildfires, or track wildlife.
The spotter plane circled overhead, radioing coordinates to the ground crew.
