spinnakers

Downwind racing sails

Spinnakers are large, lightweight sails used on sailboats when running before the wind.

Unlike the main sail, a spinnaker billows out in front of the boat, capturing wind to maximize speed on downwind legs.

The sail's distinctive balloon shape makes it easily recognizable: The fleet rounded the mark and hoisted their colorful spinnakers.
