start line
Where races begin
A start line is the marked boundary where a race begins, the point from which all competitors begin their attempt.
Runners line up at the start line; swimmers dive from blocks positioned at it.
The term extends to any designated beginning point: We're back at the start line with this project.
Also called a starting line.
