snowhouse
Frozen dome shelter
A snowhouse is a dome-shaped shelter built from blocks of compacted snow, traditionally constructed by Inuit peoples for temporary or seasonal housing.
The blocks are cut and stacked in a spiral pattern, with body heat and a small lamp warming the interior despite freezing temperatures outside.
The word is a direct translation of the Inuit term; igloo is the more familiar English word for the same structure.
