placemats
Under the dishes
Placemats are protective mats set beneath individual place settings at a table, shielding the surface from hot dishes, spills, and scratches.
They range from casual woven or plastic varieties for everyday use to decorative fabric or wicker versions for formal dining: She set out the placemats before laying the silverware.
