skim-coating

Thin plaster layer

Skim-coating is applying a thin layer of compound or plaster to a wall or ceiling to create a smooth, even surface.

The technique covers imperfections, old textures, or repaired areas before painting: We had to skim-coat the entire room after removing the wallpaper.

The result is called a skim coat.
