substitute teacher
Temporary classroom instructor
A substitute teacher is someone who temporarily takes over a class when the regular teacher is absent.
In American schools, substitutes (often shortened to "subs") may be called for a single day or longer periods: We had a sub in math today.
The role ranges from following lesson plans to simply keeping order until the regular teacher returns.
