bat mitzvahs
Girls' coming-of-age rites
Bat mitzvahs is the plural of bat mitzvah, the Jewish ceremony marking a girl's coming of age at twelve or thirteen, when she assumes religious responsibilities as an adult member of the community.
The term combines Hebrew *bat* (daughter) with *mitzvah* (commandment).
The celebration typically includes a synagogue service where the girl reads from the Torah, followed by a reception that can range from modest to elaborate.
She's been to three bat mitzvahs this spring.
The male equivalent is bar mitzvah.
