ship bell
Vessel's bronze gong
A ship bell is a bell aboard a vessel used to mark time and signal watches.
Traditionally, bells are struck in a pattern every half hour, with eight bells marking the end of a four-hour watch: It was six bells in the morning watch.
Ship bells also signal emergencies, fog warnings, or anchoring.
The phrase eight bells sometimes refers to a sailor's death or the end of duty.
