cowbells

Herd-tracking noisemakers

Cowbells are hollow metal bells hung around the necks of grazing cattle so farmers can locate them by sound.

The same bells, or versions of them, appear as percussion instruments—struck with a drumstick to produce a sharp, clanking tone.

In popular music, cowbell has become something of a joke after a comedy sketch demanding "more cowbell" in a rock song: The producer kept asking for more cowbell.
