nautical flag

Ship's colored banner

A nautical flag is a flag flown by ships to communicate information—nationality, status, or signals to other vessels.

The international maritime signal flag system uses colored flags for letters and numbers, allowing ships to spell out messages: The vessel flew nautical flags spelling out her distress.

Individual flags also carry specific meanings; a yellow flag signals quarantine, a red flag warns of danger or munitions aboard.
