shemagh

Arab head covering

A shemagh is a traditional Middle Eastern headscarf, typically cotton, worn for protection against sun, sand, and dust.

The square cloth is folded diagonally and wrapped around the head and face.

Originally associated with Arab and Bedouin dress, shemaghs have been widely adopted by Western military forces in desert operations: Every soldier in the unit wore a shemagh against the sandstorms.
