setpieces

Theatrical scenic elements

Setpieces are carefully planned and rehearsed sequences, whether in film, theater, sports, or military operations.

In cinema, a setpiece is an elaborate scene designed to showcase spectacle—a car chase, a battle, a heist: The movie's best setpiece is the zero-gravity fight.

In soccer and other sports, setpieces are plays from a dead ball: corner kicks, free kicks, penalty shots.

The term implies preparation and choreography rather than improvisation.

Also spelled set pieces or set-pieces.
