seriate
Put in order
To seriate is to arrange items in a sequence based on some graduated property—size, date, intensity, or another measurable characteristic.
The term appears most often in archaeology, where artifacts are seriated to establish chronological order, and in developmental psychology, where children learn to seriate objects by height or weight.
The sherds were seriated by thickness to determine the sequence of pottery styles.
