select committee

Targeted legislative group

A select committee is a temporary legislative body appointed to investigate a specific matter or handle a particular task.

Unlike standing committees, which are permanent and cover broad policy areas, select committees dissolve once their work is complete: The House formed a select committee to investigate the January 6th attack.

They typically have subpoena power and produce final reports with findings or recommendations.
