sea mines
Submerged naval weapons
Sea mines are explosive devices placed in water to damage or destroy ships and submarines.
Unlike land mines, they float at various depths or rest on the seafloor, detonating on contact or when triggered by a vessel's magnetic field, sound, or pressure.
Naval forces use them defensively to protect harbors and offensively to blockade enemy ports.
Minesweepers clear them: The channel was closed until sea mines could be removed.
