magnetic mines
Ship-seeking sea bombs
Magnetic mines are naval explosives that detonate when they detect the magnetic field of a passing ship's steel hull.
Developed for warfare, they sit on the seafloor or float at controlled depths, triggering automatically when a vessel comes within range.
Ships counter them with degaussing—reducing their magnetic signature—or minesweepers that simulate ship signatures to trigger detonation safely.
