school desegregation
Mixing student bodies
School desegregation is the process of ending racial separation in schools, particularly the dismantling of systems that assigned students to different schools based on race.
In the United States, it followed the 1954 Supreme Court ruling that "separate but equal" schooling was unconstitutional.
Methods included redrawing district lines and busing students across neighborhoods: The city's school desegregation plan met fierce resistance.
