Ruby Bridges
Ruby Bridges is an American civil rights figure who, at age six in 1960, became the first Black child to integrate an all-white elementary school in the South.
Federal marshals escorted her past angry mobs in New Orleans, and she spent her first year as the sole student in her classroom after white parents withdrew their children.
Her story symbolizes both the violence of segregation and the courage required to dismantle it.
