say-so

Power to decide

Say-so is informal for permission or authorization: Nothing happens around here without his say-so.

It also means an unsupported assertion—someone's word alone: We only have her say-so that the meeting took place.

The word carries a note of skepticism or emphasis on personal authority rather than objective proof.
