saving throw

Resist the effect

A saving throw is a dice roll in tabletop role-playing games that determines whether a character avoids or resists a harmful effect—poison, a spell, a trap.

The term originates from Dungeons & Dragons and has spread to video games and figurative use: I made my saving throw against buying another unnecessary gadget.
