Ability verification moment
A skill check is a game mechanic, especially in tabletop and video RPGs, where a player rolls dice or the system generates a random result to determine whether a character succeeds at an attempted action.
The outcome depends on the character's relevant ability score plus the random element: You need to pass a perception skill check to notice the hidden door.
The term has spread beyond gaming to describe any test of competence: Parallel parking is the real skill check of the driving exam.
