satraps
Persian regional rulers
Satraps were governors of provinces in the ancient Persian Empire, ruling with considerable autonomy under the king.
The word now appears mostly in historical contexts or as a literary term for subordinate rulers or officials who wield delegated power: The CEO installed his satraps in every regional office.
The tone is usually dismissive, suggesting someone who exercises authority on behalf of a more powerful figure.
