sarsaparilla

Vintage soft drink

Sarsaparilla is a plant whose root was traditionally used to flavor beverages, and by extension, a sweet carbonated drink flavored with it or something similar.

The old-fashioned soft drink became associated with the American West and general stores: He ordered a sarsaparilla at the saloon.

The word also refers to the tropical vine itself, once believed to have medicinal properties.
