sand fly
Tiny coastal biter
A sand fly is a small biting fly found in sandy coastal or tropical areas.
Several unrelated species share the name—some transmit diseases like leishmaniasis and sand fly fever.
Their bites cause itchy welts.
The sand flies were relentless at dusk.
Also spelled sandfly.
