sally port
Fortified secure entrance
A sally port is a secure gate or passage in a fortification, originally designed to allow defenders to make a sudden offensive rush—a sally—against besiegers.
In modern use, it refers to a controlled entryway in prisons or secure facilities, typically a double-gated passage where one door must close before the other opens: The prisoner was transferred through the sally port.
