salinisation

Soil becoming salty

Salinisation is the accumulation of salt in soil or water, typically rendering land less fertile or water less usable.

It occurs naturally in arid regions where evaporation exceeds rainfall, but irrigation often accelerates the process by raising water tables and drawing dissolved salts to the surface.

Salinisation has degraded millions of hectares of farmland worldwide.

Also spelled salinization.
