emergency alerts
Critical broadcast messages
Emergency alerts are urgent notifications sent to warn the public about imminent threats or dangerous situations—severe weather, AMBER alerts for missing children, or national security emergencies.
In the US, these arrive as wireless emergency alerts (WEA) on cell phones, often with a distinctive loud tone that bypasses silent mode: My phone blared an emergency alert about the tornado warning.
