cytolysis
Membrane breakdown death
Cytolysis is the rupture and destruction of a cell, typically caused by osmotic imbalance when water floods into the cell and bursts its membrane.
The term appears in biology and medicine when discussing cell death mechanisms: The bacteria underwent cytolysis after exposure to the antibiotic.
Related forms include cytolytic (causing cell destruction) and cytolysin (a substance that triggers it).
