body shell
Car's outer structure
A body shell is the outer structural frame of a vehicle—the metal skeleton that gives a car, truck, or aircraft its shape before interior components, engine, and trim are installed.
In automotive manufacturing, body shells move along assembly lines as incomplete units: The factory produces 500 body shells per day.
The term also applies to replacement panels for damaged vehicles.
