drogue chute
Spacecraft deceleration device
A drogue chute is a small parachute deployed to slow and stabilize a falling object before a larger main parachute opens.
Drag racers and landing aircraft use drogue chutes for braking.
The term also applies to small chutes that pull larger ones from their packs: The drogue chute deployed at 25,000 feet.
