river dolphin

Amazonian aquatic mammal

River dolphins are freshwater cetaceans found in major river systems of South America and Asia.

Unlike their ocean-dwelling relatives, they have long, narrow snouts adapted for catching fish in murky water, and most have poor eyesight—some are nearly blind.

The term covers several distinct species: the Amazon river dolphin (pink dolphin), the Ganges and Indus river dolphins, and the Yangtze river dolphin (now likely extinct).
