regrooving

Restoring tread depth

Regrooving is cutting new treads into worn tires to extend their usable life.

The practice is common for commercial truck tires, which are designed for regrooving, but illegal or dangerous for passenger vehicles.

More broadly, regrooving can mean cutting grooves into any surface: They regrooved the vinyl to restore the damaged record.
