replacing

Putting something new

Replacing is putting something new in place of something else.

You replace a broken window, a worn tire, or a retiring employee.

The thing replaced is usually removed, damaged, or inadequate: They're replacing the old carpet with hardwood.

To replace can also mean to put something back where it was: She replaced the book on the shelf.
