refute

Demolish an argument

To refute is to prove something false or someone wrong, typically through argument or evidence: The study refutes claims that the vaccine is dangerous.

In careful usage, refute implies successful disproof, not mere denial—you can't refute an accusation just by saying it's untrue.

But the word increasingly appears where deny or reject would be more precise.
