Altering document structure

Reformatting is changing the format or structure of something.

You might reformat a document to meet submission requirements, or reformat a hard drive to erase its contents and prepare it for fresh use.

In computing, reformatting often means wiping storage media clean: I had to reformat the drive after the virus.

The word also applies to reorganizing text, data, or layouts: She spent an hour reformatting the spreadsheet.
