file systems

Digital folder structures

A file system is the method an operating system uses to organize and store data on a disk or other storage device.

It determines how files are named, arranged in directories, and retrieved.

Common file systems include NTFS for Windows, ext4 for Linux, and APFS for Mac.

Different file systems handle permissions, maximum file sizes, and recovery from crashes differently: The drive was formatted with an incompatible file system.
