redoubts
Small temporary forts
Redoubts are temporary fortifications, typically earthwork enclosures without flanking defenses, used to protect a position during a siege or battle.
The term extends figuratively to any stronghold or defended position: The university remained a redoubt of conservative thought.
A last redoubt is a final refuge when other positions have fallen.
