fastness
Impregnable mountain refuge
Fastness has two distinct senses rooted in different meanings of fast.
From fast as secure or firm comes fastness meaning a stronghold or fortress—a place difficult to penetrate: a mountain fastness, the fastness of an ancient castle.
From fast as quick comes the less common sense of speed or swiftness.
A third sense describes the quality of being resistant to fading: colorfastness, the fastness of a dye.
