red-eye

Sleep-deprived travel

Red-eye refers to several things connected by redness or lateness.

A red-eye flight departs late at night and arrives early morning, leaving passengers with bloodshot eyes from lack of sleep: I caught the red-eye from LA to New York.

Red-eye is also the photographic effect where flash reflects off the retina, making eyes appear red in pictures.

In casual use, red-eye can mean cheap whiskey or strong black coffee.
